Checkpoints

There are 9 checkpoints in total and 1 finish line (understatement of the year). You will never have to travel too far without seeing some of the most incredible volunteers out there (they truly do rock). Our checkpoints will be fully loaded with excellent food options, gallons of delicious drinks and wholehearted volunteers that will go above and beyond to help you on your adventure. All food allergies can be and will be catered for – as long as you let you know before the event (sadly we aren’t mind readers).

Cut off times

At Epona, we are all about the adventure and we really don’t want you guys stressing too much over cut off times. You will have a total time of 50 hours to get across that finish line. That is genuinely a lot of time. It’s an average of 2 miles per hour and we know if you are signing up to tackle a 100 miler then you have it within you to average at least 30 minutes per mile.

Drop bags

Drop bags ARE recommended and NOT compulsory. Each runner is entitled to 1 x drop bag and it must NOT exceed 45 cm x  75.5 cm x 45cm; Volume: 132 litres in size. Your 1 x drop bag will be available to you at mile Checkpoint 2, Checkpoint 5 and Checkpoint 8. Please note all drop bags will be returned to the finish line in time for your finish. Plastic boxes or suitcases will not be allowed.

The Route

This incredible 100 mile adventure is very much achievable with the right training and approach. The route itself may seem a little daunting with 17,500 ft of elevation gain but the course itself is very much runnable and let’s be honest we all walk at some point during a 100 miler. It just means you can take in some of the most breathtaking views Wales has to offer. The beautiful mix of Offa’s, Cambrian and Beacons really do come together to deliver a whistle stop tour full of highlights that will live long in the memory and in the legs.

The Elevation

The Epona 100 will be a mental and physical rollercoaster at times with an accumulative elevation gain of 17,500 ft over the 100 miles – this course packs a punch but also a big cwtch. There are plenty of runnable sections with lots of downhill for those who love cutting loose. Since you wondered, we thought we’d list every mountain you tackle in order of ascent – Sugar Loaf, Skirrid Fawr, The Blorenge, Gilwern Hill, Blaen Onneu, Mynydd Llangynidr, Pant y Creigiau, Bryn Melyn, Tor y Foel, Table Mountain, Pen Cerrig Calch, Pen Allt Mawr, Pen Tywn Glas, Mynydd Llysiau, Pen Trumau, Waun Fach, Pen Y Gadair Fawr, Rhos Dirion, Twmpa, Hay Bluff, Twyn Llech, Black Mountain, Sugar Loaf for a second time – that’s a grand total of 23 mountains.

Who are the cool cats organising the Epona 100?

We are the team behind Pegasus Ultra Running and Wild Horse 200. We’ve been working in the ultra trail running industry since 2012 and competing in events since 2010. This isn’t our first rodeo and it won’t be our last.

Our goal is to make Epona 100 the gold standard of 100 milers in Wales. Taking all the good stuff, phasing out the bullshit and just putting on a proper event that welcomes everyone with a smile and a big cwtch (google it if you’re not sure, a good excuse to learn some Welsh – it’s a great language).

What to expect once you sign up?

A friendly ‘welcome to the adventure’ (event) email will be sent to the email address you registered with.
The next time you will hear from us (directly) will be in the form of an email 8 weeks before the event, then another email 4 weeks before the event and a final email 2 weeks before the event.

Alas that isn’t the last communication – please keep an eye on your mobile for a phone call from our Race Director a couple of days before the event is due to take place – don’t worry you haven’t done anything wrong, it’s a peace of mind call to make sure you’re ready for the big day!

We’re not promising you an easy run. My goodness there is a total elevation gain of 17,500 ft. But please know – this is very much an achievable challenge with the right training and game plan on the day(s).

Epona will help you reach your wildest dreams when it comes to running a 100 miler.

Race Organiser Reviews

“I don’t know where to start. It’s the first time I’ve left a review for something that has impacted my life so much. I can’t recommend this event enough. The organisation is outstanding. The support from the race director Rhys is unbelievable. The lasting memories I’ve made during the event leave me lost for words. If you’re looking for a 200mile Ultra Marathon, don’t look anywhere else. I genuinely believe the support these guys offer is another level to anyone else, they will fill you with confidence and surround you by support.
Matt Fynn

“I’ve run 3 times with Pegasus Ultra Running and each time I’ve felt so supported, looked after and encouraged. From personal touches like a phonecall from the RD, no cut offs, no judgement. All runners/walkers welcomed. The best marshal’s and incredible aid stations. sign me up for more next year I’m in”

Issy Evans

“What can I say about Pegasus Ultra Running, besides being run by an absolute legend of a team in Rhys and Cerys, the thought behind the events is simply outstanding. Taking part in a Pegasus event, you can see they have the runners experience as their main priority! Little things like waiting at the finish line to personally award medals to every runner, being at the aid stations and seeing every runner off from the start line, its these things that make Pegasus better than the rest.
